MSD19 Update: Quarantine Guidelines & Modified Schedule

Mascoutah Families and Faculty & Staff,

We want to remind everyone that we will be on a modified schedule for this week. Also the CDC has revised the quarantine periods. We are awaiting IDPH and ISBE to issue final guidance.

Revised Quarantine Guidelines: Coming Soon

Once we have the updated guidance, we will update information on the website. The new guidance is very similar to the 5-day general public quarantine guidance issued last week. Below is a summary of what we expect in the new guidance.

The key is symptom- and fever-free for 24 hours following the 5-day quarantine period. This will be beneficial for staff and students as they may be able to return to school sooner. We are evaluating this information as it seems it is never just straightforward.

Our nurses will be reviewing dates in line with this new guidance and setting new return dates with students. We will follow up with families with updated return dates as quickly as we can determine those.

A big part of the guidance is putting in place, or keeping in place, specific mitigation protocols for everyone's protection. A key one is masking at all times following the 5-day return until a 10-day period has been reached. I do stress right now proper masking protocols are important to help mitigate this spread. The recommendation is surgical masks over cloth masks.

Note from the CDC and IDPH

Staff or students who test positive or are experiencing systems for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, should isolate for 5 days after onset of symptoms, or 5 days from specimen collection date if no symptoms are present. To calculate the 5-day isolation period, day 0 is the first day of symptoms or specimen collection date if asymptomatic. If they continue to have fever or other symptoms have not improved after 5 days of isolation, they should wait to end isolation until they are fever-free for 24 hours and symptom free.

Schools should ensure that staff or students who test positive for COVID-19 also do the following:

  • Continue to wear a well-fitted mask around others (including at home) for 5 additional days after release from isolation. If unable to wear a mask when around others, the case should continue to isolate for a total of 10 days.

  • Avoid being around students or staff who are immunocompromised or at high risk for severe disease.

  • If masks need to be removed (e.g., for lunch), ensure 6 feet of physical distancing until 10 days after symptom onset or positive test.
