Superinitendent's Message

Dear Mascoutah School Community,

It is my belief that our schools are at their best when we work together as a community to support both our students and staff. This week, concerns regarding alleged bullying and our administrative response at Mascoutah High School have gained a lot of attention on social media. I am reaching out today not only to provide clarity in the matter, but also to reinforce our commitment to student safety and keeping our schools a place of belonging.

On Monday of this week, administration was made aware of a petition circulating around that alleged bullying was taking place by a very small group of individuals. I want to assure you that when allegations of bullying come to our attention, they are met with immediate action. Student safety is, and will always be, our top priority. Since Monday, our team has been working diligently to better understand the full scope of the concerns. Actions, include, but are not limited to the following:

MHS Principal Mrs. Kelly Johnson and her team have already interviewed over 50 students to ensure their voices are heard and their accounts of events are accurately documented.

We have provided multiple avenues for students to share their stories, including direct conversations with teachers, counselors, social workers, and our anonymous online reporting tool through our partnership with Gaggle.

Our administration has even reached out directly to current students who shared their experiences on social media to ensure their concerns are documented and addressed formally.

To ensure transparency and fairness, I have engaged District legal counsel to conduct an independent review of both the allegations and our administrative response.

I understand there can be frustration or uncertainty that can arise when people do not have all the information, but please know that privacy laws prevent us from sharing specific disciplinary actions regarding individual students. Silence does not mean a lack of action. Additionally, we cannot base discipline on hearsay and rumor, but we will move swiftly once facts are established. Students should be held accountable for their actions while maintaining a fair and just environment for all.

As Superintendent, I’ve had the opportunity to personally speak with some of our MHS students over the last few days. Hearing their perspectives and concerns has been invaluable. The conversations remind me that while we work hard every day, there is always room to improve. We will reflect on our processes and ask ourselves how we can better support our students.

To our nearly 4,300 students, we are here for you. If you feel, hear, or see something that isn’t right, please reach out to an adult you trust. We can only address what we know, and your voice is the most important tool we have in addressing issues that may arise.

Thank you to our staff for your tireless dedication, and to our parents for your partnership. Let’s continue to work together to keep Mascoutah 19 not only a place where every child can engage in quality learning opportunities every day, but also most importantly feels seen, heard, and safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dave Deets

Superintendent for Mascoutah Community Unit School District 19
